Using Cover Letter Keywords to Craft Cover Letters that Get Noticed

Using Cover Letter Keywords to Craft Cover Letters that Get NoticedUsing Cover Letter Keywords to Craft Cover Letters that Get NoticedIf youve looked for a job in the past few years, youre likely aware that employers are finding new ways to use resumes as screening tools. Web sites (Ladders included) devote thousands of pages to discussing the best practices of resume writing. Meanwhile, a cottage industry has grown up around certified professional resume writers (CPRWs) who study the art and technique of producing a resume with the best chance of navigating the software and human readers who review and judge your document. While experts talk less about titelseite letters, they must navigate the same course as your resume. If the sources are quiet on titel letters, do they matter anymora?Yes, said some CPRWs, ATS vendors and human-resource managers who handle the documents at both ends of the process.Granted, your resume is center stage. Your deckblatt letter may not be read at all, a nd it wont salvage a poor resume, but it must be crafted just as carefully to satisfy software algorithms and HR screeners. The introduction of the ATS as a first link in the chain has changed everything about the writing process, say CPRWs and HR managers. Like your resume, your titelseite letter has little room for error and demands exacting attention to structure and usage of keywords. To determine the best rules for writing a cover letter, Ladders asked the experts how cover letters are handled throughout the process.Do you need a cover letter? To start with, do you even need a cover letter?Technology-wise, some ATSes treat cover letters as searchable text, the same as your resume many dont. Human process-wise, however, its the rare recruiter who even bothers to pass cover letters on to hiring managers. But that doesnt mean that you should stop writing them. Cover letters are a concise way to communicate your value to a company, and some recruiters and hiring managers do use them to winnow candidates. They demonstrate your attention to detail and anticipation of the companys needs. Finally, small employers dont necessarily employ ATSes, meaning your cover letter will more likely be read by human eyes. How an ATS handles a cover letterNathan Shackles is a sales manager for ApplicantStack, an ATS made by Racarie Software and one of the software programs that render cover letters as searchable text. Shackles said that, like many ATSes, the application accepts cover letters as text pasted into its online form, not as an attachment. Therefore, the application stores cover letters with the resume as searchable text.Id say this is fairly common, that cover letters are searchable, Shackles said. Because often, people will describe technologies in their cover letters and not put them in their resumes, for whatever reason. Thats the reason we search the cover letter as well. From that vantage point, Shackles recommends that job seekers look at the cover letter as a way to put in additional skills and credentials to add additional searchable keywords that a company may have programmed in the ATS to identify candidates for a specific job posting.Your elektronischer brief is the cover letterMany ATSes, including ApplicantStack, also process resumes received via e-mail. In those cases, the ATS renders the content of your e-mail as the cover letter and assumes any attachment is your resume. Thus, when asked to e-mail a resume as an attachment, assume your e-mail content will be saved as a cover letter and write it accordingly. On the flip side are ATSes that only process resumes, not cover letters. Tom Boyle is director of product strategy at one such ATS vendor, SilkRoad Technology. Most ATS programs update or create a job seekers profile by uploading a resume next, they cherry-pick information to parse and fill in the fields to create a profile within the ATS. While Boyle has seen ATS software parse all sorts of resumes and formats, he noted that SilkRoa d only renders cover letters as attachments and doesnt divide it up into fields. That means the ATS doesnt render your cover letter as searchable text. Thus, finessing the cover to make it machine-friendly by seeding it with keywords wont influence your applications ranking with this type of ATS.Once a cover letter has become an attachment, its unlikely that it will be searched and processed like a resume, Boyle said, given that the number of ATS programs that have the ability to search an attachment on a candidates profile is very small. How do humans process your cover letter? What happens to your cover letter once it reaches human hands?David Couper, a career coach, said that the recruiters at most Fortune 500 companies dont even send him the cover letter, let alone scan it into an ATS.His experience is backed up by research conducted by Phil Rosenberg, president of reCareered, an executive career-coaching service. Over the past two years, Rosenberg has surveyed hundreds of HR mana gers and recruiters and interviewed management at the Top 10 job boards. He found thatLess than 10 percent of HR departments scan cover letters.Eighty percent of HR staff, hiring managers and recruiters read the resume first.Job boards dont keyword-search cover letters, only resumes. However, dont count those cover letters out. According to the surveyMost hiring managers have denied interviews to candidates qualified by their resumes, but disqualified by additional information in their cover lettersTailor the resume as well as the cover letterCouper advises his clients that you just never know whether someone is going to read the cover letter and whether it will make or break your application. I recommend that the job hunter matches the job posting and includes keywords, he said. I also suggest that you lead in with a hook, preferably a personal contact, to someone the recruiting manager knows or some specific information that relates to the company or industry. The cover (letter) i s one of those items that you never know about but in the end you hope that it gets to someone - not a machine - and they read it.But this attention to customized cover letters may be missing the mark as far as achieving a high ATS ranking. Rosenberg noted that most candidates put the majority of their customization (if any) in their application in a cover letter, using a largely static resume.Job seekers do that in the hope that the words on their resume magically match the keywords a companys HR department or recruiters are searching for in their prescreening process, he said. But the odds of matching keywords between a job listing and an uncustomized resume stink, Rosenberg said, generating response rates that range between 0 percent and 5 percent in healthy hiring years and sank to less than 2 percent in the current job market. Hence, he advises clients to spend more time customizing their resumes than tinkering with their cover letters.Whats the safest thing to do? Tailor bot h your resume and your cover letter to match specific job listings. Mandy Minor, a resume writer with J Allan Studios, handles the possibility of ATS scanning by giving her clients several choices of what to use in a cover letterI build a template with phrases such as, I am an accomplished CHOOSE ONE marketing manager or marketing director or project manager so that they can pick the title that will line up best for each job opening, she said. I also use industry keywords in a brief, bulleted list of accomplishments in the cover letter, which gets the attention of not just the ATS but also the human reader.

More of Your Most Popular Career Questions Answered

More of Your Most Popular Career Questions AnsweredMore of Your Most Popular Career Questions AnsweredThere are many questions that come up while conducting a job search or when advancing ones career. Allow us to increase your career intelligence and take you on the next step in your journey to the job you want. Here are several questions Vault has received in recent weeks1. How should one answer a question regarding his or her GPAespecially if youre a professional that did not attend college (i.e. you dont have a GPA)?Companies dont usually ask for your GPA unless they are recruiting you right out of school. In that case, your GPA is used to compare you with other candidates from your class. If a job application asks for a GPA, but you dont have one, you can leave the question blank or submit Not applicable. However, if you omit a GPA for whatever reason on your resume or in the application, be prepared to answer questions about it in the interview. Not attending college is an obvio us explanation for a GPA absence, but without a degree you must be prepared to demonstrate real work experience related to the position for which you are applying. Good luck2. A good friend of mine has asked me to recommend him for a position at my previous company. As much as I like him, I feel he is not a good fit for the position based on his past work experiences and interests. What action do you recommend? How should I convey this to him without sabotaging our relationship? The best way to handle this situation is to just be straight up and candid with your friend. Explain to him that while you love him and want to help in any way you can, this particular position is not a good fit - based on your knowledge of the company, department, and fellow employees. Rather than focus on what he does not have in terms of skills and experience show him positions in or out of your company that would be a better fit.3. I have been with my company for 8 months and I have already received one promotion. Recently, my teamberater resigned from the company. The manager of my previous supervisor is acting as an interim supervisor for me and other line managers. I havent heard whether the company plans to hire a replacement. If they do decide to hire, should apply for the position? While you appear to be on the fast track, the first question to ask yourself is - what is the scope of this new role and what are the requirements and skills necessary for success? The second question is - do you have the skills, experiences and aptitude for this new position. You might ask the interim supervisor what the plan is going forward, as it pertains to the position, and get as many details that you can on the requirements and skill sets needed for the role so that your resume can be updated appropriately. Your stock is high because of your early promotion and demonstration of success, so your inquiry will be perceived as interest, drive and assertiveness. 4. I was recently reassigned to an other dept. My new boss and my former bossdont get along well. Lines are being drawn between the two departments and I am being pulled into the fray. I would love to stay neutral and out of this whole issue, but I wonder whether this is naive and wishful thinking. What advice wouldyou provide for office place factional fighting? Some department heads can be like cats and mark their territory. You have to be very careful here, because you dont want to burn any bridges. Youre now in a new department and you need to align with your new manager. Someone said, You cant get to second with your foot on first so you will need to be conscious of how you are perceived. For example, if you are perceived as spending more time with your former colleagues and not investing enough time with colleagues in your new dept, this can hurt you and the perception others have of you within your new department. In addition, you should never say anything or email anything to anyone that could come back to hau nt you. Dont take sides. Just keep your head down, do your work, be professional at all times and support your manager and the department. Do not feed into this dept vs. dept frenzy. Any questions? Lady Antebellum to UGAs Class of 18 You can take a big risk

Lady Antebellum to UGAs Class of 18 You can take a big riskLady Antebellum to UGAs Class of 18 You can take a big riskBelow is the full transcript of the commencement address by Lady Antebellums Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood to Georgias Class of 2018Dave Haywood Wow, that welches You got the bio that I sent, President. Thank you. I figured Id let him read it. Man, thank you guys so much for having us out. Charles would be up here in just a minute. We wanted to share a few minutes and a few words to you, guys. Thank you so much to the president. Thank you so much to all the faculty and staff. This is really just a neat honor for us. Were used to being in front of people, but notlage public speaking, so please dont judge us on that tonight. We came down from Nashville today. Weve had a great day hanging out, kind of over by Tate and just reminiscing. Charles and I graduated in 04 like President Moore had said, and man, we sat right over there by the band for every home game from 200 0 to 2004, so yeah. Huge dog fans. We get score updates in ur monitors when were on stage at night. Thats a true story. But Im sure you guys are probably wondering what in the world a few country singers are doing up on this stage, and I have to assure you, were wondering the very same thing. Our jurney is a little different, and hopefully theres a little bit of intrigue with that. But for Charles and I, a little bit of our back story, led us to a really interesting distribution policy. But we grew up in Augusta, Georgia, down the road. All right. That welches my family. They follow me everywhere I go. But anyway, so we grew up in Augusta, and graduated from Lakeside High School, and really only applied to one college. Did you only apply to one? Yeah, so we didnt have a backup plan.Itscommencement seasonFollow Ladders Commencement Addresses magazine on Flipboard to watch and read all of the most inspiring speeches from this year and years past.Im happy we got in, because by todays st andards, we would not have gotten in. But man, we loved it here in Athens. Charles and I have been great friends since we were probably 12 years old. I always knew that he welches such an amazing singer, and it was at Georgia where we really started writing music together. We lived down the street, a couple blocks off of Cloverhurst Avenue in a place we called the Treehouse, which has probably fallen down by now. But it was our senior year at Georgia in 2004, and Charles and I didnt play much music while we were here. I was an MIS major, Charles in finance. I know, computer programming people, I hear you. But man, we loved it so much here. We didnt play a lot of music while we were here. But our senior year, we were at a party at our house, and I was playing some stuff on the guitar, just kind of making up some chord progressions, and Charles walked over. We hung out a bunch, obviously, here in Athens, and came over and said, Man, what are you picking on? I said, I dont know, I just kind of make stuff up. He said, Well, play that again, and he started making up some melodies, some lyrics, and that was the very first song that we wrote together was in 04 here in Athens. So, kind of a special start to us and our writing career as a band, and we just fell in love with being creative and writing music. That song we wrote was really awful, by the way, and I hope nobody ever hears it.Charles Kelley Tell them the name.Dave Haywood Yeah, the name was, it was called Carpe Diem Is on Vacation, and that ones gone in the special file folder that will never get heard, yeah.Speaker 3 Sing it.Dave Haywood It was so bad. It was so bad.Charles Kelley It went something like this. (singing) Some other junk.Dave Haywood Charles Kelley, everybody. But we graduated from Georgia and our story was kind of different. We didnt know what we wanted to do, so we graduated and I went off to Buckhead and worked doing internal auditing at an accounting firm, which is a little different than w here I am today. Yes, accountants, thats right. My cousin is here graduating as an accountant, so if youre hiring out there, keep an ear out for him. But we went off to work, and I worked in Atlanta. Charles was up in Winston-Salem doing finance. We just loved writing music together. So, we would travel a lot for our jobs, and we would meet up on the weekends and write music.About after a year or two of working out in the real world, we loved the people we worked with but just felt like something was missing for us. At that time, Charless brother, Josh Kelley, called us and said, Man, you guys kind of have a unique talent with writing songs. What if you came to Nashville, lived in our house and tried to write music? So, thats what we did. We took a risk and moved to Nashville. I loaded up my Blazer with my guitar and some Polo shirts and headed straight to Nashville, and me and Charles spent every day writing songs. I think thats what we want to encourage you guys with a few points, and well be brief, because I know you guys want to go downtown after this.See, were used to cheering. Cheering is good. Were used to that, okay. It makes me feel at home. You can yell whenever you want. Thats fine. Thank you, its great. But so we were up in Nashville writing music and we met Hillary Scott within a year and started writing as a writing trio, like President Moore had said, hoping to pitch songs to other artists, and that was our goal. We wrote probably a dozen songs together, decided we should go out and play a show, and said, Man, this is too much fun. We should start a band, and came up with a crazy name. I helped create our MySpace page. So, were dating ourselves. I understand that. But man, we had a blast doing it. We are still, to this day, so honored and humbled to be able to play music and do what we love to do. Its really a special, special honor. But that risk, I think the few things Id leave you with, and Charles will be here in just a second, but there was a bit of a risk for us to go to Nashville, but at the same time, we felt like with a degree in our hand, it wasnt really that big of a risk at all. It was a calculated risk, and I think thats what Id love to encourage you guys with tonight. Now, you have a degree, and now you can take a big risk, because you have an amazing diploma and degree from tonight, and be open, be open to things you havent even dreamed of yet. For Charles and I, we didnt graduate from Georgia and say, Were going to Nashville. We want to be country singers. We got out there and worked hard in the real world and kept our minds open and followed our passion and ended up landing in Nashville in a country band. So, for all you guys that dont have a clear vision of where you want to go, be open, because life and the good Lord can really surprise you. So, welcome my buddy, Charles Kelley.Charles Kelley Why do I got to follow that? Youre just so good. You were funny. You got laughs. Can I use this chalice? Is this o pen? Its water. So, Im not going to lie. When I first found out that we were going to do this, I got a little nervous. I started writing down some stuff. My wife, shes really intelligent. Shes definitely the smart one in our marriage, and so I had my first little draft. I said, Baby, Im about to lay it on you. Listen to this. We kind of go. We start talking about this, talking about Lady Antebellum, and I said, Now, this is where Im really going to bring it in, bring it home.I was going to talk to you all about the Venn diagram. Remember the Venn diagram with the circles? And then they intersect and you got, in one circle, hope, you got your dreams. Next circle, you got what youre good at. Next circle, you got responsibility. And when those things mesh, beautiful harmony. She laughed, she literally laughed, and so I deleted it. She said, Is that what youd want to hear if you were sitting in here? I said no. But also, Im 36 years old, its going to be hard for me to relate to you guys perfectly, but I do remember being there, and I remember being scared you know what, because I didnt have a clear vision. But you know what? I dont know. I knew I had this great degree and I would figure it out.But I guess I wanted to just talk about something you might be interested in, Instagram. Its such an interesting thing to me, and were all on Instagram. I think the one thing that I just want to encourage everybody, just stop comparing yourself to other people on Instagram. We know what everybodys doing. Like youre sitting there and you did 100 pictures in front of the mirror doing the perfect little duck lip face. Then we see it and were like, Gosh, shes so beautiful. I wish I had that hair. I wish I had this. I mean, we all are going through the same thing, the same insecurities. We go through it all the time. If I see another band or an artist doing something that looks really cool and were not doing that, I get jealous, and I think jealousy and this comparison is the thi ef of happiness. So, just try to not compare yourself to other people because it will distract you for some happiness. The next thing, too, Im not trying to sound preachy, but money has never, ever been, for me, the thing thats brought me happiness. I thought it was going to be the thing. I was sitting in your shoes going, Oh, man, Im going to be a millionaire. Im going to have a jet ski and go on, I dont know, whatever else millionaires do. I thought it was going to make me so happy. Its funny, I mean, the thing that has brought me the most happiness is chasing my dream, and I really do think I could have found happiness in so many different avenues. I really did, as funny as it sounds, I loved studying finance and being in those accounting classes. I really did. I enjoyed it. It was something that I think I could have found great purpose in.But I also had this artistic side that I knew was kind of in the shadows, and so kind of to go back to what Dave said, theres so many options f or you, guys. Dont think you only have one clear path and one clear direction. I hate when people say, Dont have a plan B, because itll distract you from the plan A. Thats BS, man. I totally had a plan B. It took all the risk away from me. I felt like I could go in there with such, just free abandonment and take this risk while youre young, because trust me, Im married now. Ive got a two-year-old. When you have those responsibilities, I guarantee you, I would not have taken a risk like I did with Dave and moved to Nashville. But again, University of Georgia prepared me, prepared me to work my butt off. I have such great work ethic. I wasnt as smart as you guys, but maybe like a couple of the rows back, but I developed a lot of work ethic. You guys, I mean, a 4.0 Now, there wasnt one professor that just didnt like you and wanted to give you a B? Not one. Blown away, blown away. All right, thats crap. You dont want to hear that. Oh, yeah, this was kind of clever. I dont like it when p eople say plan A, plan B. How about we call it two plan As? Perfect. But I guess go jump off the deep end a little bit while youre young. I know a lot of you probably know exactly what youre going to do. You got some job set up. But if you dont, dont be afraid to jump off the deep end. It definitely gets a little higher, that diving board. That was something cool I thought Id write down.Trust me, the older you get, the higher and higher that diving boards going to seem. Can you tell Im getting nervous? A little chalice time. Theyre like helping me through it. They know Im struggling. Another thing too, man, go see the world. I grew up in Augusta, Georgia, and Im not going to lie, man, I was so basic. I literally I really was. Im not saying theres anything wrong about being basic. But I had the same friends. We all dressed alike. We all thought alike. Im telling you, the minute I moved to Nashville, and Im not saying Nashville is seeing the world, but it opened my eyes to Okay, ther es this artistic side. Maybe now I can wear some tight jeans, and I did. Maybe I can get a tattoo, so I got this tattoo on my arm, and its my favorite band of all times the Beatles. One of my favorite songs is Blackbird, and theres this line, All your life you were only waiting for this moment to arise. I got it in 09 because I said, I dont care if I make another dime in this world. I said, When I wake up in the morning, this makes me happy. I loved it so much, and I wanted to be reminded of that, because sometimes, I dont care even if you have your dream job, youre going to have moments that youre just bored and it feels like work. Trust me, I hate flying. I hate being on a bus all the time. I hate missing my family. But to have those few moments of pure passion and purpose, I think, is what lifes all about, so I hope all of you can find that.I encourage you to, as you travel, if you do get the chance to travel, I mean, theres so many amazing different ethnicities, sexual orientatio ns, races, backgrounds, and they bring so much light and color into your world. I mean, when you go over to Italy and youre looking up and youre seeing, what was that joke? The 16th chapel? Sistine Chapel. When youre going over to these places and youre seeing this, it makes your life almost feel like, it makes you not sweat the small stuff in a weird way. When I saw that, I said, Man, weve been on this Earth a long, long, long, long time, and when I get worried that somethings not working out in my life, I think about, like, Hey man, this is a long, long journey, and people have been here forever, and were all going to survive. Its all going to be okay. I know you all have so many fears, and theres so much in the world right now, so much uncertainty, but I dont know. I think its going to be okay. That was horrible.Oh, this is going to be good. I want to leave you with this. Be nicer to your parents, please. I was so selfish. I was so selfish, high school and college. I thought I kn ew everything. You dont. You dont, you dont. They helped you so much and they sacrificed so much. I was thinking the other day, with my two-year-old. He pooped in the tub. Without hesitation, I just went bam, bam, bam. It was like The Matrix. I just, no hesitation. I was like, I bet my moms done that. I was like, so your parents, whoever raised you, theyve been putting up with your crap their whole life. So, the least you can do, give them a big old hug after this and thank them. This is such a huge night and accomplishment, not just for you but for them. With that, Im going to end it. Guys, good luck. I wish you all well. I hope you can find your dream job. But just be happy, find purpose, and be nice to Mom and Dad. You were way better than mine, Dave, sorry. We are going to end you on this. We felt like we had to sing for our supper. Thank you. You take that. You can burn that.Dave Haywood All right.Charles Kelley You ready, Dave? Sing along if you know it. (singing) Sing it if yo u know it, come on. (singing) Do it for Ray. Hes up in the sky now. Dave Haywood. Taking this with me.

5 Common Job Interview Mistakes

5 Common Job Interview Mistakes 5 Common Job Interview Mistakes A job interview is your best opportunity to impress your potential employer- and its when youll make or break your chances of being hired. While a lot of advice tells you what to do in an interview were asking what are some definite donts of the job interview process? While there are certainly a lot of obvious answers to these questions, others are sometimes overlooked. Even some of the most qualified professionals have absinken victim to these mistakes at some point in their careers.1.Wrong outfitTheres an old saying in the geschftsleben world Dress for the job you want.Take this rule a step further during the interview. Dress for a job one or more steps above the one for which you are interviewing. Wearing a mini skirt or a t-shirt at a job interview shows a lack of professionalism.Think about the dress code for the position. As noted in a recent article in Business Insider, there are generally five levels of business attire, here are the top 3 for interviews belowIf the job calls for business casual attire, dress in executive casual for the interview. This includes a blazer, slacks, and professional shoes such asclosed-toe pumps or laceless leather loafers. If the job is business attire, go Boardroom and make it extra with nice cufflinks, a solid tie and super shined shoes.2. Using your phoneKeep your smartphone in your purse, pocket, or briefcase, and dont take it out for any reason. Dont forget to turn it off, as sound or vibration can distract you and the hiring manager. Its rude and unprofessional to take it out and look at it during downtime between questions. Even having your phone in your hand or on the table is a sign that something on the phone is more important than the job you are interviewing for.Consider a job interview a no-phone zone from the moment you walk through the front door of the business to the moment you leave. (Yeah, that includes the waiting period)There is one single e xception to this rule and it applies more to laptops and tablets than phones. Having your portfolio presented on a tablet or laptop is absolutely acceptable, especially in the tech space.3.Not finding your balanceSometimes, it isnt what you say but how much you say that makes the biggest impression. Answers to questions should make a point right away, no BS.Efficiency is a good quality, and a potential employee who spends five minutes answering a simple question is anything but efficient.Stick to the three sentence rule Unless the question involves explaining a detailed process, any answer longer than three sentences is probably too long. This rule also applies to anyone prone to giving answers that are too short. If an interviewer asks someone to describe themselves, or to give an example of a time they went above and beyond, they dont want to hear a short answer. Just be sure to answer the question.4.schwimmbad mouthing othersIt doesnt matter what happened to you at a previous job. Your hiring manager only cares about your experience and how youll fit with their team. Your story of terror involving your last boss has no place at a job interview, it makes you seem like a drama magnet.Instead, focus on your career progression and desire to do something meaningful aka something you believe this employer is better suited to providing. If you didnt voluntarily leave your previous job, you still dont need to bring up specifics.Taking ownership of your history, good or bad, shows character so while you should never volunteer the fact you were fired, you should also never lie about it.Hiring managers know that people lose their jobs for any number of reasons.5. Not asking questionsAt the end of an interview, you have the opportunity to ask questions of the hiring manager. Having too many questions can be annoying and a waste of the interviewees time, but having no questions at all makes you come off as uninterested in the job.Asking thoughtful questions is a great wa y to end the interview on a positive note and give you a better idea of whether or not youd actually succeed in the position. Here are some samplequestionsWhat would be the biggest challenge facing the person who fills this role? How is success measured for this role? Why do you enjoy working here? Can you describe the company culture?Avoiding all of these job interview mistakes is a big parte ofa successful interview that will ultimately win you the job.

Should You Hire Underqualified Job Candidates - Spark Hire

Should You Hire Underqualified Job Candidates - Spark HireEvery company wants the best and the brightest working for them, but hiring the best and the brightest isnt always easy. Obviously, there is a lot of demand for top talent so being successful in recruiting these applicants is sometimes difficult, even impossible. Thats why recruiters and hiring managers should carefully consider hiring underqualified candidates. Now, that may seem counterintuitive to driving the success of your business, but in many cases, these job candidates can prove just as fruitful as top talent, according to Recruiter.com.They report that a Leadership IQ Study of 20,000 employees found that only 11% of new employees fail at their new job because of a lack of skills. The study proved that new hire success was not dependent on qualifications but mainly down to the new hires attitude, motivation, temperament, coach-ability and EQ.The sooner companies embrace this concept, the better. Recruiter.com references US Census Data that by 2020, about 40% of the workforce will be comprised of millennials. This means that recruiters and hiring managers may have to begin lowering their standards anyway. New hires will be lacking in skill and experience and will require more training. However, this can literally pay off for companies. Recruiter.com points out that with less experience and minimal skills, companies will no longer have to pay top dollar for new hires. In salary negotiation talks, they will have the upper hand and be able to pay job candidates less, saving on costs with little impact on the success of the business.Regardless of whether your company is hiring top talent or not, new hires are an investment. They require training on company policies, procedures and the daily tasks of their specific job. Putting the time and training into these employees will not only guarantee great workers regardless of their skill set but individuals who feel valued by the company and are in turn loyal .Underqualified job candidates do not have to be counted as a loss to the business. They can have just as much of a significant impact on the success of the company as top talent. The key here lies in the hand of recruiters and hiring managers, rather than the candidates. Its all about investing in the individuals hired in order to produce a team that abrollcontainer-transportsystem in the best interest of the company and delivers proven results. With time and resources, these new hires that were once deemed underqualified will become the rising stars in your company and the industry.Would you hire underqualifed job candidates? Jeff Bezos says the true secret to business success is to focus on the things that wont change, not the things that will

Jeff Bezos says the true secret to geschftliches miteinander success is to focus on the things that wont change, not the things that willJeff Bezos says the true secret to business success is to focus on the things that wont change, not the things that willAmazon CEO Jeff Bezos is constantly asked to predict what the future will be like in 10 years - and hes game to shrug and try - but he said thats exactly the wrong way to go about business strategy. Its interesting, I do get asked quite frequently whats going to change in the next 10 years. One thing I rarely get asked is probably even more important - and I encourage you to think about this - is the question Whatsnotgoing to change in the next 10 years, he said on stage at Amazons inaugural ReMars artificial-intelligence and robotics conference on Thursday.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe answer to that question can all ow you to organize your activities. You can work on those things with the confidence to know that all the energy you put into them today is still going to be paying you dividends 10 years from now, he said. For Amazons e-commerce business, for instance, he knows that in the next decade people will still want low prices, fast shipping, and a large selection. Its impossible to imagine people saying to me, Jeff, I love Amazon. I just wish you delivered a little more slowly. Or, I love Amazon, I just wish your prices were a little higher, he said.Bezos said that when a business leader can identify those big ideas that are stable - and are usually customer needs - it changes how the leader organizes their business, what they fund, what risks they take, and so one. The focus becomes, What can we do to offer lower prices? To deliver faster? and so on, Bezos said.In contrast, he said that when a leader bases their strategy on things that will change, like who the competitors are and what th eir activities are, you are going to have to be changing your strategy all the time. And, he added that when it comes to knowing what wont change, you wont have to do a lot of research on that. Radiologic Technologist Skills List and Examples

Radiologic Technologist Skills List and ExamplesRadiologic Technologist Skills List and ExamplesA radiologic technologist is a healthcare worker who specializes in imaging tests like x-ray, MRI and CT scans, performed primarily in diagnostic capacities. Some radiologic technologists will specialize in certain disciplines related to specific areas of the body, like mammography, for example. Radiologic technologistswill have close working relationships with the radiologists who interpret the images. In order for doctors to be able to do their jobs, the technician has to be thorough and accurate in their imaging technique. Theyll also be responsible for keeping patients as comfortable as possible during their tests, which can sometimes be frightening and stressful for the patient. Radiology is a full-time job that comes with a fairly high median income. Radiologic technologists can steadily increase their income over time by developing specialties, and by acquiring more experience over time. How to Use Skills Lists You can use the skills mentioned here to help you in your job search. Use them in your resume, especially in the descriptions of your work history. You can also use them in your cover letter to describe prior work experience. Consider mentioning a few of these traits in order to give examples of how youve demonstrated them in prior work. You can also use these words in your interview as well. Come prepared to discuss thetop skills listed here, and be ready to share examples of how youve exemplified each. Each job will require different skills and experiences, so make sure you read the job description carefully and focus on the skills listed by the employer. Heres a list of the three fruchtwein important skills employers look for in a radiologic technologist. Communication Skills As a radiologic technologist, youll be responsible for several layers of communication with both patients and colleagues. Because theres not any one specific type of per son who might need health-related imaging, youll be interacting with a broad and diverse cross-section of the population. Youll be required to explain procedures to patients, and because youll be encountering all sorts of diversity, youll need to have an agile communication style so that you can communicate effectively with anyone who crosses your lab or table. Another critical part of the job is understanding that patients might be anxious or scared. For some, they could be enduring the most frightening possible prospect. They could be seeing you on the worst day of their life. It wont always be so dire, but even under the best circumstances, medical diagnostic imaging is typically uncomfortable, awkward, or inconvenient for the patient. Youll be on the front line, standing between the patient and the answers they seek. Youll have to manage stress (theirs, as well as your own), express compassion, and remain calm when patients become agitated or upset all while doing your job well . Mechanical Aptitude In order to calibrate and maintain radiology equipment, a radiologic technologist will have to be comfortable with their technology and gear. Each machines model will be different, and as a result, learning and re-learning new technology will be part of the job. A technologist will also have to understand how to adjust radiation exposure time and intensity. behauptung factors impact the health of the patient and maximize image quality. Most training courses will provide guidelines and instruction for how to get to know the equipment, but it will be up to the technologist to expand their knowledge, and to master the art of handling their medical imaging equipment. Medical and Anatomical Skills Along with learning about the technology and equipment required to be successful, a radiologic technologist will also learn a good deal about examination methods, human anatomy, safety around radiation protection, and more about the basics of caring for patients. A successful radiologic technologistwill be comfortable interacting physically with patients, will be comfortable with the human body, and will be confident in their ability to position patients accurately on the table in order to use radiation as safely as possible. Becoming a radiologic technologist is a smart way to secure a long future of healthy employment with hospitals and related medical facilities. Employers are likely to seek out technologists who are socially competent, compassionate, and emotionally responsible enough to communicate effectively with patients. Theyll also look for candidates who can balance these interpersonal skills with mechanical and anatomical know-how, for the perfect balance. Required skills will vary based on the job for which youre applying, so also review our list of skills listed by joband type of skill. New Ways to Use Social Media for Job Searching

New Ways to Use Social Media for Job Searching New Ways to Use Social Media for Job Searching Have you made your New Year’s resolutions? When a new job or career change is on your list, be sure you aren’t missing out on opportunities to include social media for job searching in your personal marketing plan. Consider incorporating the following strategies into your job search to take advantage of what social media offers: LinkedIn for Job Searching Most everyone recognizes that having a LinkedIn profile is an important part of job search preparation, but are you using all of LinkedIn’s tools to your best advantage? One often overlooked opportunity to demonstrate your expertise on LinkedIn is the chance to post status updates to your profile. It’s easy to do; LinkedIn offers you the option each time you sign in. What should you put in your status update? Include news and information that shows you know what’s going on in your industry and commentary on topics to prove you’re up-to-date on the most current trends in your field. Don’t miss the chance to “tag” people in your status update if you are passing along information they originally shared. You can also tag companies to let them know you are mentioning them. All you need to do is include the persons or company’s name with the @ symbol in your update (for example @JohnSmith), and LinkedIn alerts them of the mention. Facebook for Job Searching While traditional media outlets want you to think posting on Facebook can only lead to losing a job, the truth is that many job seekers who tapped social media to get a job believe Facebook was their most useful network. Since most people prefer to consider Facebook a “personal” network, it’s a challenge to make the most of the fact that many people do use it to find professional candidates. The solution? Create public status updates. You can reap the benefits of allowing certain status updates to be found in public search with a few clicks. Follow the link on the top of your Facebook page to check your privacy settings. Once there, click on the icon that says “Followers” on the left side of the screen. Then, under Follower Settings, check the box that says “turn on follow.” This will give you an option to create public updates and for people to “follow” your public updates. Once you set this up, each time you post on Facebook, you’ll have the option to allow the post to be “public.” Create public posts similar to what you may share on LinkedIn or any network: include news and information related to your field and commentary on what’s new in your industry. When you do, you’ll add another searchable series of posts to your digital footprint and make it more likely that people will find you when they search for someone with your skills. Twitter for Job Searching Like LinkedIn and Facebook, Twitter offers a great resource to demonstrate your expertise. When you use it to post updates and connect with others online via using their Twitter names in your posts, you can expand your network and make sure people know about your expertise. One thing you may not have considered: you can learn what’s new in your field by following Twitter handles from your professional organizations and conferences. Even if you can’t personally attend an organization’s professional event, it’s possible attendees will be there to “live tweet” what goes on at the conference. Look online to see if there is a hashtag (a word that includes a # sign) to help designate tweets from the conference. Follow that hashtag on Twitter and reap the benefits of what your colleagues share. Google+ for Job Searching You know that “Google it” is synonymous for “search for it,” but did you know that participating in Google’s social network can help make it easier for people to find you when they are looking for someone with your expertise? At the very least, you’ll want to create a complete Google profile. It’s as easy as signing up for a Gmail address; if you already have one, you’ll just want to enhance your profile. Fill in your professional information and help create a Watts line directly to Google. When you actively use Google+ by selecting people to follow and posting professional updates, you’ll be helping Google understand what you know and make it more likely for people who follow you via Google+ to come up with your information when they search for someone with your qualifications. 4 Things You Need to Do After Every Job Interview (and 1 Big Dont)

4 Things You Need to Do After Every Job Interview (and 1 Big Don’t) 4 Things You Need to Do After Every Job Interview (and 1 Big Don’t) 4 Things You Need to Do After Every Job Interview (and 1 Big Don’t) Keep the momentum going after the job interview with the perfect follow up. [TWEET] So, you submitted your beautifully crafted resume, made it through the pre-screening phone call and had the interview. You think it went well, but there was no mention of an offer and now you're wondering what to do. Job searching is a job in and of itself but unlike a good job, there is no handy training manual. Post interview etiquette is very important and your behavior during this stage of the hiring process may very well make or break your chances of securing a job offer. Here are four things you should absolutely do: 1) Thank your interviewers It is very good protocol to find out the contact information for each and every person who interviewed you and send them a personalized thank you card or email the day following your interview. Make sure to address them by name, thank them for their time, and mention something they said in the interview. It is fine to restate your interest in the position as well, however you should thank your interviewer even if you don't want the job. Your job search is part of your personal brand, and thank you's say you are dignified, professional and grateful. 2) Circle back with the recruiter Whether the interview was arranged by an in-house recruiter, third party recruiter or HR Manager, if the person who set up the interview was not the same person who interviewed you, make a point of circling back with them. This is not only a common (or uncommon) courtesy, but it can also allow the recruiter to communicate any concerns that came up and allow you a chance to overcome the objections. 3) Follow up Hopefully you will have received some idea of the hiring timeframe in your interview. It is perfectly appropriate to reach out if you haven't heard back to inquire as to the decision making process and restate your interest. Do not follow up excessively, or demand responses (this will not help your cause) but be polite and respectful. 4) Continue to search Regardless of what was said in the interview or how well you think it went, until you have a written job offer in hand you do not have a job, so consider yourself a free agent and continue to network and apply for jobs. The worst thing that can happen is you will have two offers (or more) to choose from. At the end of the day, it's all about professionalism, which is why you should never, ever engage in the big post interview etiquette don't. Do NOT talk about your interview on social media. If you are positive, you risk sounding presumptuous and negative talk has cost more than one hapless applicant the job. (Recruiters use social media!). So good luck, and happy interviewing! 11 tips to help you move on from a job rejection

11 tips to help you move on from a job rejection 11 tips to help you move on from a job rejection It’s hard not to take  job rejections, like any other form of rejection, personally. But separating yourself from the situation is the key to moving on after a job rejection says Erica Keswin,  workplace strategist  and author of “Bring Your Human to Work.” Hiring managers must look through numerous candidates at a time - assuming your résumé  makes it to a human in the first place- so the tendency is to be curt when rejecting applicants. While Keswin says companies should be as respectful to candidates as  interviewees are expected to be, she recommends you don’t dwell too much on a rejection.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“The idea of honoring relationships starts with people who don’t even work there yet,” Keswin says. “When it comes to some of these recruiters, there’s no excuse in how they are treating people, but try to keep it at arm’s length.â €Yet even with more personalized rejection notes, the sting can be painful and lead to insecurity, says Lynn Taylor, workplace expert and author of “Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant; How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job.”“It’s one of the most disheartening things, especially when you think not only about the time and effort that goes into applying but how much emotion you’ve invested in the job,” Lynn Taylor said. While talking about being rejected can be embarrassing, there are steps job seekers can take to make the most of a door closed. Here are Taylor and Kerwin’s best tips on getting over a job rejection. When you first get a rejection email, take a step back and a moment to congratulate yourself for making it this farThe time immediately after getting a rejection letter can be disheartening, Taylor says, especially if it’s one you have been interviewing for. If you made it through several rounds, take the initial moments to congratulate yo urself for scoring the interview in the first place, and then take a step back from your computer to go outside or distract yourself.Rushing to crank out the next cover letter right after getting rejected can also be counterproductive, as you should wait until you are in a more positive mindset to get back into applying.“The best way to move on is to just realize that you only need one job, and this is one of many job interview situations that are there for you,” Taylor says.Remember that if the company did not want to hire you, you probably would not have wanted to work for them anyway.Often times when applicants submit their résumés, they go into a “big black hole, never to be heard from again.”If a company did not send you a personalized rejection letter, or otherwise made you feel like they did not value your time, Keswin says there is a good chance you would not have felt welcome once you got to the company.“All of those things speak to company values and how they t reat their people,” she says. “I would look in the mirror and say ‘Is that a really company I would be happy at?'”Set up social events with close family and friends, and reach out to mentorsFor those feeling particularly stung, Taylor recommends reaching out to friends or family in your inner circle who can remind you of the bigger picture. Before you hop back into the job hunt, use the first couple of days to build up your self confidence. Reaching out to mentors for feedback or support can also be helpful, Taylor adds.Be sure to thank your interviewer the day you get a rejectionSend a thank-you email the day you get a rejection letter, as even a day later a hiring manager could be on to the next 12 candidates, Keswin says.If you moved onto the interview phase, Keswin recommends reaching out to not just your recruiter, but the specific people who interviewed you, and thank them for taking the time to meet with you.“You had a different type of connection with all of these different people,” Keswin says. “You should try to make a personal connection in that email and say you hope to keep in touch. If you particularly enjoyed interviewing for the company, ask your interviewer to keep you in mind for future positionsA rejection letter doesn’t have to close all doors: “Especially if it’s a company you really thought you were interested in, you always want to leave things in a positive way to leave the door open,” Keswin says.Sometimes, when a new manager comes in and needs to hire, companies keep a record of former applicants they liked so they can fill open positions. Other times, companies will reject applicants for a full-time position, but offer them contractual work, Taylor says. Maintaining a connection with your interviewer could lead to a job down the line. You can ask for feedback on why the hiring manager didn’t go forward  - but be cautiousThe best way to know why you didn’t get a job is to ask, Keswin says. As you send a thank- you note to interviewers, she suggests saying sorry it didn’t work out, but if they had any specific feedback, you would love to hear it.Taylor, however, says that this approach could backfire. Managers often don’t have time to give detailed feedback to each rejected candidate, and asking them to take time out of their day for you could feel burdensome. “There’s a 60/40 chance you’re irritating them more than anything else,” Taylor says.If you received a few rejections in a row, take the time to analyze what could be missing in your resumeMany times people apply to several jobs during the interview stage. If multiple of your applications come out unsuccessful, you might need to examine your skills more critically, Keswin says.“I would urge people to really be honest with themselves to do a post-mortem analysis on what the issue was,” she adds. The first step is to figure out whether your rejections stem from missing skills or not being a culture fit. In the case of sk ills, it could be as simple as taking an online class and learning something new for your résumé.If you have the means, hiring a career coach could help you figure out what isn’t workingIf the reasons why you got rejected were because of not being a cultural fit, or if they were unclear, seeking professional help could go a long way, Keswin says. As a career coach at NYU, she helped qualified candidates during the financial crisis figure out which of their skills were transferable, then she targeted jobs that could use those skills.A career coach helped  Business Insider reporter Shana Lebowitz  feel more empowered, and she learned how to make a roadmap to reach her goals. Career coaches can be expensive, however, so Keswin also recommends reaching out to university alumni networks first to get the same type of support without paying a fee. When you get back into job searching, try being more flexible with what you’d consider applying toIf at first, you were uncomfortable reloc ating or transferring your skills to other industries, the time following a rejection could be a chance to widen your horizons, Taylor says.“Especially if you’re willing to be flexible on the exact job description, widen your scope just a little bit,” she says. “That may help your mindset.”If you’re currently employed, taking on another project at work could bulk up your résuméTaking on a new job could mean sacrificing the flexibility you earned through years of working at your current job, Keswin says. One way to get over a rejection is to focus on what you have, rather than what you don’t.You can also build skills for when you do try to seek greener pastures: Take on a new project at your current job, or focus on growing your side hustle.“If you realize the job search may be taking longer than you’d like, ask what are some positives you can focus on in other aspects of your life,” Keswin says. After you build up your skills, don’t be afraid to try again at y our dream companyIf a hiring manager tells you that you were a good candidate, but they found a “rock star,” and they offer to keep in touch, don’t take that information lightly, Keswin says. If you can figure out the skills you may be missing, you could try reaching out to similar positions at the company down the road. “It shows you’re really interested in the company,” she says.  This article first appeared on Business Insider.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Bye-Bye!

Bye-Bye! Bye-Bye! There are a bunch of bad ways to say goodbye to a job.You can insult your co-workers by name, scribble your resignation letter on a cake, hire a marching band to embarrass your boss, jump an emergency chute to the tarmac, curse the suits, curse the TV audience, or just shoot your boss in the back front by publishing a cliched piece of nastiness on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times.Yep, there are a lot of dumb ways to say goodbye. And then there’s the right way to say goodbye - for now - while keeping your relationships intact for the future.Finish up professionally, close out your projects, share a (tasteful) ‘see you later’ with folks around the office, and depart so that your peers remember your class and your dignity. Then after you’ve landed a great new job, take the time to drop a note to your old bosses and former colleagues. If you can candidly say that you enjoyed your time together with them, and that you will look forward to seeing them again down the long, long r oad, well…  it’s quite helpful.A few appreciative emails, a few kind words, some pleasant memories shared, all these remind your contacts of your good relationship together, and may pave the way to even more productive collaboration in the future. You may decide to let a few months pass so the sting of your departure, and the burden of your workload, are forgotten memories and the past is viewed through rosy, fuzzy lenses. And then let your former co-workers know that you are thinking of them, that you look forward to a chance to catch up, and that you look back fondly on the journey you made together.Yep.That’s the right way to say goodbye.I’m rooting for you!

How MOOCs Can Help Fill your Employee Training Gap

How MOOCs Can Help Fill your Employee Training Gap How MOOCs Can Help Fill your Employee Training Gap How MOOCs Can Help Fill your Employee Training Gap DeZube Is your workforce equipped with the skills and knowledge it needs to remain competitive and grow? If not, think MOOCs. MOOCs or Massive Open Online Courses offer employers the opportunity to train workers across a variety of skills. They can also help workers keep up with ever-evolving technology. Half of todays jobs wont exist in 2030, says Anant Agarwal, CEO of edX, a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) non-profit founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Whats more, the remainder of the jobs left will either change completely or be different in some way. Growing businesses in particular will be tasked with the challenge of how to empower their existing workforce to upskill and reskill to meet the changing demands of their jobs says Agarwal. Heres how MOOCs can help companies address their knowledge gap and employees the opportunity to develop their skills. Keeping Up with Innovation The typical MOOC is a college-level course offered via the Web to anyone who wants to enroll. Some are free to viewers who only watch the course. Other MOOCs charge students who want to complete a full course (including tests) and earn a certificate. For employers, MOOCs can be a cost-effective, efficient way to bridge employee training gaps. Theyre particularly useful for widespread workforces, smaller companies with limited time and budget for training as well as companies whose employees need to stay current as technology evolves. Steve Halligan, chief operating officer of N2grate, a 30-employee company that provides data center and cloud solutions to Federal agencies, uses the classes at Cybrary to keep his employees up to date on technical and cybersecurity innovations. Weve been using MOOCs for years, Halligan says. In a world in which no one can be an expert in all things, the ability to use ongoing, flexible content to sharpen the skill development saw has been a key piece for us. Billable hours drive PL at N2grate. That makes MOOCs a plus as employees can learn while commuting or in the evenings, instead of leaving the office to attend in-person classes. It strikes me as a smarter way to train, says Halligan. It doesnt need to be one-to-one or one-to-many at a certain time or place. Thats not how you bank or Christmas shop or how you work. MOOCs Can Help Reduce Costs As MOOCs retrain your existing workforce, they can also help reduce recruitment and employee relocation costs. There is an arbitrage to assess when recruiting talent versus growing it in-house. Since online programs do not require massive internal resources to produce, update and roll out, there is a clear benefit in terms of cost and time for growing businesses, Agarwal says. There may also be an income-side boost gained from online learning. According to Bersin Associates, revenue generated per employee is 26% higher for companies that offer training using technology, including digital learning, Agarwal says. MOOCs as Benefits Particularly for todays often restless Millennials, MOOCs can signal a commitment to employee development. As we think about the younger generation of employees, employee development is something they really care about, says Julia Stiglitz, vice president at Coursera, a MOOC with 2,000 courses and 180 specializations taught by instructors from 149university partners. Among the companys most popular offerings are information technology and project management courses, business classes that mimic the first year of a typical MBA program and specialized programs in hospitality and advanced manufacturing. Stiglitzsees larger businesses using MOOCs in novel ways that might also work for growing businesses. For example, when BNY Mellon onboards Web developers, it has them complete Courseras full stack Web development specialization taught by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Once they complete the six-course series, employees share a common set of skills and language, Stiglitz says. Cosmetics company LOreal Paris also uses MOOCs as an employee perk. Staffers can choose to take any of a curated set of courses on management, leadership, business fundamentals and data science. MOOCs that Fill Skill Gaps Even in a hot tech area like Silicon Valley, some jobs remain hard to fill and keep filled. These areas include data science, mobile development, or Web development. Sometimes, there simply arent enough qualified candidates around. These skill gaps often occur with new skills such as artificial intelligence or cloud computing all areas covered by MOOCs. MOOCs can also be an efficient way for in-house employees to gain soft skills. Agarwal says companies use edXs MicroMasters program to help new leaders gain specialized management skills without sending them to multiyear, on-campus MBA programs. Could MOOCs enable you to create a skilled workforce from the ground up? A company in West Virginia for example uses MOOCs to reinvent the careers of the 70,000 Americans who now work in the coal industry? Halligan is skeptical of using MOOCs to build a technically competent IT staffer from scratch. Yet some MOOCs offer a money-back guarantee of preparing workers for jobs. MOOCs can be of use to everyone including senior leaders. Consider the free business and enterprise skills courses at ALISON, a MOOC that covers entrepreneurship to risk management to employee management. After all, why should your staffers be the only ones learning something new?

ASME Federal Government Fellowships Celebrating 40 Years of Engineering the Greater Good!

ASME Federal Government Fellowships Celebrating 40 Years of “Engineering the Greater Good!” ASME Federal Government Fellowships Celebrating 40 Years of “Engineering the Greater Good!” ASME Federal Government Fellowships: Celebrating 40 Years of “Engineering the Greater Good!” This year, ASME is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the ASME Federal Government Fellowship Program. Since 1973, ASME has sponsored more than 100 Federal Fellows who served in the U.S. government, providing a valuable service to the nation by contributing their engineering expertise to the public policy making process. Former ASME Federal Fellows have described their year in Washington, D.C., as the most exciting, rewarding and educational period of their professional careers. ASME offers three types of Fellowships:  1) Executive Branch Fellowships; 2) Legislative Branch Fellowships and 3) the ASME Foundation Swanson Fellowship, which was established in 2010 in recognition of ASME Honorary Member and Fellow Dr. John A. Swanson, an internationally recognized authority and innovator in the application of finite elements methods to engineering. For the 2014-2015 year, the Society is seeking candidates for two types of Federal Fellows: the ASME Congressional Fellow and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Fellow. ASME members who are selected as 2014-2015 Congressional Fellows will spend one year in Washington, D.C., working with the staff of a congressional committee, U.S. senator or U.S. representative. Congressional Fellowships are designed to demonstrate the value of engineering-government interaction, bring technical backgrounds and external perspectives to the decision making process in Congress, and provide a unique public policy learning experience to the Fellow. Once chosen as a Congressional Fellow, an ASME member selects his or her congressional assignment through interviews with congressional offices, with assistance from the ASME Government Relations staff, and with reference to the issues identified in the ASME Public Policy Agenda. Because of the limited number of Congressional Fellowships available, the process is very competitive. The following credentials are encouraged: at least five years of professional experience; an advanced engineering degree; professional engineer registration; and some public policy experience.   Learn more about ASME Congressional Fellowships here. ASME is also seeking an ASME member to fill a Federal Government Fellowship opportunity with USAID, the principal federal agency providing economic and humanitarian assistance to countries around the world. USAID promotes broad-scale human progress at the same time it expands stable, free societies, creates markets and trade partners for the United States, and fosters good will abroad. The ASME Fellow will work in USAID's Office of Science and Technology, a newly created independent office within the agency that is dedicated to using science and technology to deliver more effective, cost-efficient results in development. The USAID Fellow will be expected to provide scientific, technical, and intellectual leadership, and analytical support contributing to the advancement of the office goals. Opportunities may include work with the agencys data team or GeoCenter, the Grand Challenges for Development team, the research partnerships team, or the university partnerships team. The Fellow will serve as a liaison with internal and external partners, helping USAID develop its network of development solution providers.   The Fellow will also serve as an engineering adviser to the Director of the Office of Science and Technology. Read more about the USAID Fellowship here. All ASME Federal Fellows will be awarded a stipend of $80,000 for the one year Fellowship. ASME Federal Fellows typically serve from September through August, but a January through December term is sometimes an option. Applications are now being accepted through Jan. 31, 2014. All Fellows must be U.S. citizens and ASME members at the time of application. To apply for an ASME Congressional or USAID Fellowship, fill out the online application at https://fs19.formsite.com/rsvp/form13/secure_index.html and provide the requested materials. How to Showcase Hard Skills on Your Resume Having a hard skills list in your resume skills section  is an important first step to win over a hiring manager, but there are a number of other tricks and techniques you can use to truly standout. Trick Number 1: Put Your Skills Section Towards the Top of Your Resume If you’re applying for a job where specific hard technical skills are more important than anything else, such as jobs in IT, you should consider putting your skills section above you work experience. By doing this, you ensure that the hiring manager can quickly and easily find the most important information they’re looking at a glance. In a job where possessing or lacking a certain hard skill is the key to landing an interview, this simple trick can be the difference between your resume being trashed or placed at the top of the pile. Trick Number 2: Use Your Professional Experience Section to Highlight Your Skills Of course, there are many jobs where simply listing your hard skills isn’t enough to impress the hiring manager. If you’re going to have a chance at landing these types of jobs, you need to prove you have the skills necessary to perform them â€" and a list proves nothing. For these situations, you can highlight your abilities by demonstrating how you utilized them to accomplish key goals for your company. This is done by creating an achievement-oriented professional experience section in your resume. The following two examples for a project manager will show you how effective this tactic can be: Don’t Just Say: Knowledgeable of Scrum Methodologies Prove it: Utilized extensive knowledge of scrum methodologies to complete over 12 projects within budget and on schedule. The second sentence is far more compelling than the first. It will immediately convince the hiring manager that this applicant has proven abilities with scrum methodologies. Trick Number 3: Use Your Cover Letter to Describe How You Used Key Hard Skills to Succeed There’s only so much room on your resume, and sometimes it can be difficult to properly convey everything you need to. If there are a few key hard skills that were more heavily emphasized in the description for your target job, it’s a good idea to include a more detailed story of how you have used those abilities to excel in the past on your cover letter. Looking for more ways to standout in the crowd? Learn how to showcase your interpersonal skills on your resume! This article was contributed by Kat Jackson.
